Photos of the Santa Fe Railway's

Pictures taken by Craig Bass of the right of way of the Santa Fe's Lake Elsinore branch, north of Lake Elsinore, California in February, 1983 and January, 1984. According to the Caltrans 1982 California State Rail Plan report (PDF file), the branch was officially abandoned in September of 1981.
Santa Fe depot in downtown Lake Elsinore is now home for the Chamber of Commerce The following pictures were taken in January, 1984; some time after the line had washed out through Temescal Canyon. Looking south, rusty rails begin to curve at Alberhill.
Rusty rails and guardrail at a ballasted deck bridge, looking south, south of Indian Truck Trail. Looking north at Indian Truck Trail grade crossing. The signals, and the rails crossing the roadway, stayed for a couple of years after the tracks had been removed. Interstate 15 is to the left of the picture.
Looking northwest, this bridge carried the tracks over Temescal Canyon Road
The next photo was taken at the north switch of the Arcilla siding, looking south. The line had washed out here (and many other places) a year or more before this pic was taken (note the florishing trees and bushes in the gap), and at this time the line was already being removed.
Another view of the same switch; pretty good view of a spring frog. Your additional information or comments/criticisms are welcome: feel free to email me at craigbass@gmail.com |
