Santa Fe F7 #307Most commonly seen pulling sleek passenger trains from the late 1940's through the early 1970's, EMD's F series diesel locomotives also pulled their share of freight duty across America. Santa Fe F7A cab unit number 307 is the subject of this drawing. The photo below shows similar unit #347C along with 347B on display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. Early locomotive sets were often semi-permanently coupled and all units bore the same road number, with A, B, C etc. appended as appropriate. This is not to be confused with the model designation of A or B unit - an A unit had a control cab whereas the B units were "boosters" and did not have a cab, although they did have "hostler" controls which allowed engine maintance personnel to move the B unit under its own power if necessary. Santa Fe #307 was originally part of an order of 15 F7A locomotives built between 1949 and 1953. Some of these "car body units," or "covered wagons," went on to be rebuilt into CF7 "hood unit" road switchers such as those shown in the photo at the bottom of this page.
