Santa Fe caboose #999326Also known as Waycars in Santa Fe parlance, the caboose was the conductor's office back in the day. Offering a comfortable (albeit jerky) place to spread out car reports as well as protecting the rear end crew from the weather, cabooses have all but disappeared from America's rail scene in the past twenty years. The 999326 was a Class Ce-2 waycar built by American Car and Foundry in 1927 and was rebuilt during the late 1960's in the Santa Fe's San Bernardino, California shops. I caught it descending Cajon Pass on a May afternoon in 1983, below.
